Organisers of the Niger Delta Games have confirmed full preparedness for the commencement of this year’s sporting festival, with officials promising a larger and more impactful competition.
Chairman of the Main Organising Committee, Alabo Boma Iyaye, who also serves as Executive Director, Finance and Administration of the Niger Delta Development Commission, made the announcement during an interaction with journalists in Port Harcourt.
Iyaye revealed that about 3,000 athletes drawn from across the Niger Delta region are expected to participate in the tournament, describing it as a major expansion of the inaugural edition hosted in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State.
He explained that the regional sporting event was introduced to provide a structured platform for identifying and grooming young talents, stressing that many promising athletes often lack exposure and opportunities to advance their careers.
According to him, the Commission views sports as a strategic tool for youth engagement and socio-economic development in the region.
The committee chairman assured that competition standards would meet national and international best practices, noting that officials have been directed to maintain strict compliance with rules to guarantee credibility.
Iyaye highlighted the broader impact of the Games, stating that organised sports help promote discipline and reduce youth involvement in social vices across communities in the Niger Delta.
Reflecting on the previous edition, he said the event helped strengthen unity among participating states and encouraged young people to pursue sports professionally. He expressed confidence that the Edo-hosted competition would further expand the platform for talent development.
He added that the event would not be limited to sporting contests alone, as cultural exhibitions showcasing the traditions and diversity of the Niger Delta region have been incorporated into the programme.
