The socio-political organization, Coalition Of Democrats (CODE), has raised concerns over the alleged hijacking of the Akwa Ibom State Government’s Arise Empowerment Program by political stakeholders in certain Local Government Areas, notably Ukanafun, Ibiono Ibom, and Essien Udim.
The group expressed dismay that the initiative—originally intended to support grassroots communities, including farmers, artisans, and small business owners—has been compromised by the inclusion of influential individuals on the list of beneficiaries.
Speaking to journalists in Uyo on Friday, CODE’s Secretary, Dr. Usoro Akpanusoh, stated that the manipulation of the selection process has undermined the program’s purpose and deprived deserving recipients of much-needed support.
CODE alleged that some LGA stakeholders had rigged the process to favor former lawmakers, political allies, and relatives, effectively sidelining legitimate small-scale entrepreneurs and farmers.
Describing the act as a misuse of a public welfare initiative for personal gain, the group warned that such practices promote exploitation and erode public confidence.
In response, CODE passed a vote of no confidence on the stakeholders implicated, calling for their resignation from government roles and urging them to publicly apologize to Governor Umo Eno and the people of the state to salvage their reputations.
“Their conduct proves they are unfit for public office. To restore integrity, they should step down and allow for more transparent governance,” CODE declared.
The group also urged the state government to investigate the matter urgently, calling for the formation of a special committee to oversee the program and ensure its benefits reach the intended grassroots population.
While praising Governor Umo Eno for launching the initiative to uplift rural communities, CODE reaffirmed its commitment to monitoring the program to ensure accountability, transparency, and the promotion of good governance across Akwa Ibom State.
