Nigerians facing UK visa crackdown

Nigerians seeking to study or work in the United Kingdom are now subject to tighter Home Office scrutiny, along with applicants from Pakistan and Sri Lanka.

According to UK government sources, these nationals are viewed as more likely to overstay their visas and later apply for asylum. In response, the Home Office will collaborate with the National Crime Agency (NCA) to better assess and profile visa applicants from these countries.

Official data released in March 2025 revealed that nearly 10,000 individuals who had initially entered the UK on work or study visas were later found living in state-funded asylum accommodation. Among the most common nationalities in this category were Nigerians, Pakistanis, and Sri Lankans.

The Guardian reported that UK authorities are aiming to cut down the number of student visa holders who eventually file for asylum. As part of the new approach, officials will also review applicants’ bank statements—submitted during the visa process—when considering eligibility for asylum support.
