JUST-IN: Piwuna Emerges New ASUU President

Professor Chris Piwuna has been elected as the new President of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU).

Piwuna, a consultant psychiatrist at the University of Jos Teaching Hospital and the current Dean of Student Affairs at the University of Jos, takes over from Professor Victor Osodeke, a soil scientist from Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike, Abia State.

Sources confirmed that Piwuna contested the presidency against Professor Adamu Babayo of Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University (ATBU), Bauchi. The election was held during ASUU’s 23rd National Delegates Congress on Sunday in Benin City, Edo State.

He steps into the role during a tense period, as the union faces unresolved issues such as disputes over the distribution of recently released Earned Academic Allowances, ongoing brain drain, and other systemic problems affecting Nigeria’s university system.
