Court adjourns sentencing of TikToker Murja Kunya over Naira abuse case

The Federal High Court in Kano has postponed the sentencing of popular TikTok influencer Murja Ibrahimi Kunya to May 20, after the prosecution unexpectedly sought to amend the charge against her.

Murja is currently facing a one-count charge brought by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) for allegedly abusing the Nigerian currency. The case centers around a viral video showing her spraying and dancing on ₦400,000 during a party held in December 2024 at the Tahir Guest Palace Hotel in Kano. She has already pleaded guilty to the charge.

The court session on Tuesday, originally set for judgment and sentencing, took a new turn when EFCC prosecutor Musa Isa requested permission to amend the existing charge.

Defense counsel Abubakar Saka strongly opposed the move, arguing that introducing a new charge at this stage could delay the proceedings and compromise the defendant’s right to a fair trial. He emphasized the need for the defense team to review and understand the revised charge before proceeding.

However, Justice Simon Amobeda approved the prosecution’s application, stating it was in the interest of justice. The case was subsequently adjourned to May 20 for further proceedings.

Until then, the judge ordered that Murja remain in the custody of her legal team, under the current bail conditions, which include a commitment to ensure her presence at the next court session.
