Plateau Govt Engages 20,000 Youths In Agro-Industrial Chains

The Plateau State government has reaffirmed its dedication to youth empowerment by announcing plans to expand state-run agricultural initiatives to engage at least 20,000 young people in farming and agro-industrial ventures.

This was revealed by the Commissioner for Youths and Sports Development, Hon. Musa Ashoms, during an event commemorating Governor Caleb Mutfwang’s two years in office. Themed “Celebrating Two Years of Youth-Inclusive Leadership,” the event was held at Victoria Gowon Hall, Government House, Little Rayfield, Jos, and brought together youths from across the state for dialogue, updates on empowerment programs, and interaction with government officials.

Delivering a message on behalf of Governor Mutfwang, Secretary to the State Government Arch. Samuel Jatau encouraged young people to embrace skill-building and entrepreneurship to shape their future.

Ashoms highlighted that in just two years, the Mutfwang administration had already laid a strong foundation for youth development.

“Today, I proudly speak not just as your commissioner but as someone who truly believes in the potential of Plateau’s youth,” he said.

He disclosed a new agreement with the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA), Ibadan, aimed at training 10,000 youths in phases. With agriculture emerging as a key sector, Ashoms noted that the program would transform participants into not only farmers but agro-entrepreneurs and key contributors to food security.

He also shared that thousands more would benefit from the BARC Farm Project, which will engage young people in modern, profitable agriculture, positioning Plateau as a hub for agri-business innovation and food processing.

Furthermore, Ashoms announced plans for a digital and outsourcing technology hub in Jos, to be set up in the refurbished Standard Building through support from the Federal Ministry of Digital Economy. The hub will connect Plateau’s tech-savvy youth to global markets and remote work opportunities.

He added that over 250 young people are currently undergoing leadership and citizenship training at the Shere Hills Centre in Lamingo.
