Lagos govt begs medical doctors to suspend three-day warning strike

The Lagos State Government has urged the Medical Guild to call off its planned three-day warning strike, assuring doctors that their grievances are being addressed with urgency.

Doctors in the state’s public health sector, under the Medical Guild, had announced a warning strike starting today, Monday, July 28, 2025, to protest what they termed “unlawful and disrespectful” salary deductions. The strike is expected to run from 8:00 a.m. today until 8:00 a.m. on Thursday, July 31.

In a statement on Sunday, Tunbosun Ogunbanwo, Director of Public Affairs at the Lagos State Ministry of Health, said the government is aware of the issues raised during the Medical Guild’s press briefing on Saturday, July 26, and is committed to resolving them.

“The Lagos State Government assures the public that the concerns of the doctors are being addressed with sincerity and urgency. Negotiations and engagements with the Medical Guild are ongoing,” the statement read.

The Ministry noted that such a development has not been recorded in recent years within the state’s health sector and reaffirmed the administration’s dedication to the welfare of health workers.

It added that a Conciliation Committee, comprising representatives from both sides, has already been set up, held meetings, and is reviewing documents submitted by the Guild in accordance with policies and fiscal guidelines.

“As a responsible government, we recognize the vital role healthcare professionals play in delivering quality services to over 20 million Lagos residents. We appeal to the Medical Guild to embrace dialogue while we work towards a fair and peaceful resolution, in order to prevent disruptions that may affect the public,” the statement concluded.
