Achievers University, Owo, Ondo State, has reaffirmed its zero-tolerance policy against drug use, abuse and other social vices, warning that any student found culpable will face outright expulsion.
The Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of Council, Achievers University, Professor Bode Ayorinde, gave the warning while delivering his remarks at the 19th Matriculation Ceremony of the University for the 2025/2026 academic session, held at the Prof. Abubakar Adamu Rasheed Auditorium of the university on Friday, 30 January 2026.
Professor Ayorinde made it clear that Achievers University would not compromise its standards under any circumstance, stressing that the institution places premium value on discipline, safety and moral uprightness.
“Achievers University has zero tolerance for drug use and abuse. If you are caught, you will be expelled. If you introduce or attempt to introduce drugs into the University, you will be expelled. If you see anyone in possession or using drugs and you do not report, you will also go,” he declared.
He urged students not to suffer in silence if anyone attempts to lure them into drug use, but to report such incidents immediately to the University authorities, noting that drug abuse has the capacity to truncate academic dreams of the students.
The Pro-Chancellor also warned against nudity, leakage of nude pictures or videos, describing such acts as offences that attract immediate dismissal. He cited an instance where a student who took to social media to issue reckless security-related threats was sent home.
“Have pity on your parents who are spending so much to give you quality education. Do not allow their huge investments in you to be a waste,” he admonished the newly matriculated students.
Professor Ayorinde further emphasized that all students of Achievers University are equal before the rules, stressing that the University is free of sexual abuse, harassment and molestation. He listed offences that attract outright expulsion to include bullying, fighting, possession or use of drugs and narcotics, social media misuse, cultism, lesbianism or gay practices, sexual assault or harassment, fraudulent activities, forgery and related misconduct, among others.
“It is not difficult to graduate from this University. Just keep the rules,” he added.
Earlier in his address, the Acting Vice-Chancellor, Professor Oyesoji Aremu, formally welcomed the newly admitted students into the Achievers University community, describing the matriculation as a significant milestone that confers on them the status of bona fide students of the university.
Professor Aremu charged the matriculants to embrace responsibility, discipline and hard work, noting that university education is a journey of intellectual growth, character formation and leadership development.
He warned strongly against cultism, examination malpractice, cybercrime and drug abuse, which he described as a growing menace among young people with devastating academic, psychological and health consequences.
“Drug abuse clouds the mind, destroys potential and can lead to academic failure, mental disorders, organ damage and even sudden death. I pray that we will not lose any of you during your stay on this campus,” he said.
The Acting Vice-Chancellor further advised students to beware of unsolicited assistance, even as he counseled them to always seek medical help from the University Health Centre when unwell.
Reassuring parents and guardians, Professor Aremu pledged the University’s commitment to providing a safe, nurturing and intellectually stimulating environment that promotes academic excellence, character development and leadership training.
Highlights of the ceremony included a matriculation lecture titled “Your University, Your Network: Building Relationships and Opportunities,” delivered by an alumnus of the University, Ayobami Felix-Olaniyi; an academic procession; recognition of outstanding academic performance; formal presentation and admission of the matriculating students; administration of the matriculation oath; colourful cultural displays, among other activities.
The ceremony marked the formal admission of about 950 fresh students into Achievers University for the 2025/2026 academic session.
