Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has officially withdrawn his membership from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), citing the direction the party has recently taken as the reason for his departure.
Atiku, who is now actively involved in the emerging opposition coalition, submitted his resignation in a letter dated July 14, 2025, addressed to the PDP Ward Chairman in Jada Local Government Area of Adamawa State.
In the letter, Atiku expressed disappointment that the PDP has strayed from the core ideals on which it was founded.
His statement reads in part:
“I hereby formally resign my membership of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) with immediate effect.
I am deeply thankful for the roles I’ve been privileged to play within the Party, including serving two full terms as Vice President and running as its Presidential candidate on two occasions. These experiences remain significant milestones in my life.
Unfortunately, I can no longer align myself with the current path the party is pursuing, which, in my view, no longer reflects the founding values we once shared.
It is with great regret that I take this step, but the differences have become impossible to reconcile.
I extend my best wishes to the Party and its leadership moving forward.
As a founding member, this is a painful decision, but a necessary one.”
