The Confederation of African Football (CAF) is set to unveil a new trophy for the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) on Wednesday, according to DAILY POST.
The launch will take place in Morocco, which is hosting this year’s edition of the biennial tournament.
CAF President Patrice Motsepe, who has repeatedly pledged to transform women’s football on the continent, sees the introduction of the new trophy as part of his broader strategy to elevate the women’s game in Africa.
Over the years, Nigeria’s Super Falcons have dominated the competition, winning the previous trophy nine times. Equatorial Guinea has claimed it twice, while current champions South Africa’s Banyana Banyana have one title to their name.
The 2024 WAFCON tournament will run from Saturday, July 5 to Saturday, July 26 in Morocco.
The opening match will see the host nation, Morocco’s Atlas Lionesses, face off against Zambia’s Copper Queens.
