The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC has called for the prosecution of vandals that destroyed its offices in some areas of the country.
The INEC Chairman, Mahmood Yakubu who made the call at the induction retreat for resident electoral commissioners held in Lagos on Wednesday, said the attacks would not stop INEC from conducting the elections/
“The lost materials will be replaced but there is a limit to our ability to keep replacing lost or damaged items in just 86 days to the general elections.”
The INEC boss therefore called on security agencies to fish out the perpetrators and prosecute them without delay.
He noted that INEC will collaborate with security agencies and traditional rulers to forestall future attacks on its facilities.
“Five local government offices of the commission were attacked by yet unknown persons. Buildings are being destroyed, critical facilities lost”.
These facilities include a total of 1,992 ballot boxes, 399 voting cubicles and 22 electric-powered generators as well as thousands of uncollected PVCs. These attacks must stop and the perpetrators apprehended and prosecuted”. he noted
Professor Yakubu described Sunday’s attack in Ebonyi State, as regrettable as the attack was coming just two days after its officials relocated to its office in the South-Eastern state.
