Insecurity: After 10-hr Closed-door Meeting, Senate Passes Confidence Vote On Service Chiefs

Following a 10-hour closed-door meeting with the Service Chiefs, the Nigerian Senate has expressed confidence in their leadership, assuring the nation that relief from the prevailing insecurity is imminent.

Commencing at approximately 12:50 pm on Tuesday, the Senate convened in a closed session with the service chiefs, national security adviser, and select ministers. The session concluded a few minutes to 10 pm, after which Senate spokesman, Yemi Adaramodu, briefed journalists on the meeting’s outcome.

This gathering followed a previous one held the previous Tuesday, which was adjourned and subsequently expanded to include ministers responsible for national security and the Minister of Finance, Wale Edun.

Addressing reporters after the extensive deliberation with the service chiefs and designated ministers, Senate spokesman Senator Yemi Adaramodu conveyed that they received reassurance from the service chiefs regarding Nigeria’s impending safety.

Additionally, it was announced that the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi, SAN, would be summoned to ensure the expeditious trial of suspected criminals.

Adaramodu emphasized that the session fostered fruitful engagement, with concerns addressed and assurances provided. Notably, the Interior Minister’s plans for enhancing criminal apprehension through standardized identification processes for Nigerians received attention, with commitments from border patrols to intensify monitoring.

Furthermore, the Minister of Finance pledged prompt disbursement of funds, a commitment welcomed by the Senate.

In response to these developments, Adaramodu affirmed the Senate’s vote of confidence in the security chiefs, citing their commendable efforts, including recent successes such as the apprehension of suspects in Bwari and ongoing operations in Ekiti and Plateau states. Despite sporadic attacks, the Senate remains committed to supporting initiatives to address security challenges, including facilitating the swift release of funds as promised by the Minister of Finance.
