Lagos airport runway opens with ground lighting

The domestic runway at the Lagos airport has been opened for use after the successful installation of CAT III Airfield Ground Lighting system on the Runway tagged 18L/36R.

This brings to an end, airlines inability to land on the runway after sunset.

At 6:15 am, November 11, the first flight took off on the runway.

The project, which commenced effectively on July 8, 2022, lasted for 90 days.

According to the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), this is part of efforts aimed at improving safety and efficiency of flight operations at the Murtala Muhammed Airport, Lagos.

During the period, there were no disruptions to flight operations as the International Airport runway was used for all inbound and outbound flights operations.

While air operators and other stakeholders applaud the government for delivery the project in record time, others also appealed that the adjoining taxiways on the runway be given attention.

The completion of the airfield lighting systems ends the 13 years of blackout on the runway which had led to huge losses for airlines in terms of fuel burn, flight delays and inconvenience to passengers taxing from the International Airport runway to the domestic terminal after sunset.
