The Lagos State Wastewater Management Office (LSWMO) has shut down a three-storey residential building in Ilasan, Lekki Peninsula II, within the Eti-Osa Local Government Area, for illegally releasing untreated wastewater and sewage into public drains using a pumping machine.
The action was disclosed via an official post on the Lagos State Government’s Facebook page, following a credible report from a whistleblower.
Investigations revealed that the building’s occupants had been discharging waste during nighttime hours into nearby roads, drainage systems, and the lagoon, in clear violation of environmental laws and posing serious health hazards.
Authorities condemned the act, calling it a willful violation that threatens public health and the surrounding environment by increasing the risk of disease outbreaks.
“The Lagos State Wastewater Management Office remains committed to upholding sustainable wastewater practices. This latest enforcement action at Ilasan, Lekki Peninsula II, is in response to the intentional dumping of untreated wastewater and faecal matter into public drains using a pumping machine,” the agency stated.
It noted that the environmental violation came to light following a whistleblower’s complaint. The office highlighted that the illegal discharge was being carried out at night, significantly polluting the environment and endangering residents.
The General Manager of LSWMO praised the whistleblower for their civic responsibility and urged other residents to report similar infractions. He assured that all reports would be treated with strict confidentiality and reaffirmed the agency’s dedication to safeguarding both public health and the environment.
