On Friday, there was widespread concern regarding the destruction of a perimeter fence at Akanu Ibiam International Airport in Enugu. Reports suggest that thugs were responsible for the demolition, causing anxiety among nearby residents and airport staff. Swift action by the Nigerian Air Force led to the apprehension of some culprits.
Confusion arose as there were conflicting claims about the involvement of the police and unidentified gunmen accompanying the perpetrators. This incident is not the first time Akanu Ibiam International Airport has faced such an attack. In August 2020, a similar event occurred, leading to strong condemnation from the then aviation minister, Hadi Sirika, and the former Enugu Governor, Rt Hon Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi.
Architect John J. Emejulu, accused of orchestrating the previous destruction, is again implicated in bringing thugs who damaged a section of the airport fence on January 12, 2024. Private security guard Mr. Mark Benson reported armed men and thugs invading the area through the estate gate, leading to arrests by airport authorities.
Aviation Minister Festus Keyamo expressed dissatisfaction with the situation and initiated efforts to hold the perpetrators accountable and prevent future occurrences. Enugu airport manager Mr. Hillary Umunna visited the scene along with other aviation workers.
Residents of Oriental Estate, which shares a fence with the airport, condemned the incident. Barr Vincent Egechukwu Obetta emphasized that the disputed land was already in court, making any related actions sub-judice. Residents called for adherence to the rule of law and expressed frustration with the use of police to carry out illegal activities.
Oriental Estate Chairman Engineer Chris Aniemeje urged the federal government to address Emejulu decisively, highlighting his history of alleged invasions. Other concerned residents, including Engr Chidiebere Didiugwu and Joshua Akachukwu, voiced their distress, fearing vulnerability to attacks.
The Enugu State government expressed sadness over the fence demolition and pledged to bring the perpetrators to justice. Attempts to obtain reactions from the Enugu State Police Command, specifically the Police Public Relations Officer DSP Daniel Ndukwe, were unsuccessful at the time of reporting. Emejulu, laying claims to the airport land, remained unresponsive, and his current status after being transferred to the State CID is unclear.
