The North-East Governors’ Forum has blamed the poor road network in the subregion as a contributing factor to the insecurity in the region.
This is contained in a nine-point communique signed by the Forum’s Chairman and Borno State Governor, Babagana Umara Zulum, at the end of its 11th meeting in Damaturu, Yobe State.
The Forum in the communique also called on President Tinubu as a matter of urgent concern to address the issue of abandoned projects which is critical to addressing poverty, insecurity and general underdevelopment of the subregion.
It promised to recommit itself to the opening up of the subregion to investment opportunities, agriculture for food security, combating climate change, skills acquisition and the industrialization of the subregion to provide employment to the teaming youths who are vulnerable to recruitment into the army of the insurgents.
The Governors in the communique reechoed their commitment to the pursuit of common issues of subregional concerns and pursuance of a collective course on matters that are related to the security, social and economic integration of the sub-region.
“Forum notes that addressing the security challenge in the Northeast requires a multidimensional approach of not only the kinetic strategy but also addressing the root causes such as youth employment through vocational and technical education, improved road networks, improving education and reducing poverty.
“The Forum is committed to addressing the issues of security by tackling the current situation while addressing some of the root causes”, it said.
The Northern Governors have scheduled to meet again on the 27th to 29th of July 2025 in Jalingo, Taraba State to continue its deliberation.
