Shun Scheduled Meeting Again, Incur Our Wrath, Reps Threaten Poly Rectors

The House of Representatives Committee on Federal Polytechnics and Higher Technical Education has issued a stern warning to rectors of federal polytechnics, stating that any rector who fails to attend future meetings called by the committee may face sanctions.

This came after the committee’s chairman, Hon. Fuad Laguda, criticized the rectors for failing to attend a critical session aimed at addressing the future of technical and vocational education in Nigeria. The meeting, held at the National Assembly complex in Abuja, recorded attendance from fewer than 30% of invited rectors, drawing strong disapproval from the lawmakers.

The committee expressed frustration over what it described as a lack of respect from polytechnic leadership and a general indifference to efforts aimed at revitalizing the sector.

“We called this meeting to understand if there’s an issue—if you have grievances or feel we’ve failed to support you,” Laguda stated. “Let me remind you that this same committee is advocating for the creation of a National Polytechnic Commission. We’ve also pushed for increased funding for polytechnics and are working on a bill to eliminate the discrimination between HND and BSc qualifications. All of this is being done to uplift the polytechnic system. Yet, you’ve shown little ownership or cooperation.”

Laguda criticized the absence of many rectors and their failure to follow specific instructions regarding the meeting, describing it as a clear sign of disregard for legislative oversight.

He warned that future noncompliance would attract disciplinary measures, stating, “There’s no need to sugarcoat it. Your actions speak louder than your words. You were sent formal invitations and instructions, which many of you ignored.”

In response, the Rector of the Federal Polytechnic, Daura, Katsina State, Musa Gambo, acknowledged the committee’s grievances and promised improvements. “We are grateful for your feedback. On behalf of my fellow rectors, we commit to making the necessary adjustments and providing all required information,” he said.

Also speaking, the Rector of Federal Polytechnic, Kaura Namoda, Zamfara State, Aminu Yusuf, attributed the low turnout to communication issues, not disrespect. He assured the committee of full cooperation going forward.

“I believe the poor response wasn’t intentional. It likely resulted from communication lapses. I assure you that I will respond to every outstanding request within a week,” Yusuf said.
