Tinubu orders reopening of land, air borders with Niger Republic

President Bola Tinubu has instructed the reopening of Nigeria’s borders with the Republic of Niger, along with the lifting of other sanctions against the country. The decision aligns with the resolutions of the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government made during its Extraordinary Summit on February 24, 2024, in Abuja.

Previously, ECOWAS leaders had agreed to revoke economic sanctions against several countries, including the Republic of Niger, Mali, Burkina Faso, and Guinea. Tinubu’s directive further entails the lifting of the suspension on all commercial and financial transactions between Nigeria and Niger, as well as the cessation of service transaction freezes, including utility services and electricity to Niger Republic.

Moreover, the President has mandated the unfreezing of assets belonging to the Republic of Niger in ECOWAS Central Banks. Additionally, travel bans imposed on government officials and their families are now rescinded.

Similar measures have been extended to the Republic of Guinea, with the lifting of financial and economic sanctions.
