Premier League teams invested a mere £96.2 million in player acquisitions during the January transfer window, marking the lowest spending in three years. Clubs have adopted a more cautious approach to expenditures due to the constraints imposed by the Premier League’s Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR), which have curtailed their financial capabilities.
In contrast, the previous year witnessed a record-breaking January spending spree by Premier League clubs, totaling £780 million. The recent reduction in spending reflects a more prudent financial strategy in compliance with the PSR.
Among the eight clubs that disclosed fees for player signings, Crystal Palace led the way by spending a league-high total of £30.5 million on Blackburn midfielder Adam Wharton (£22 million) and Genk right-back Daniel Munoz (£8.5 million). Tottenham secured Genoa centre-back Radu Dragusin for £26.7 million.
Other clubs that engaged in registered-fee player transactions include Manchester City (£12.5 million), Aston Villa (£9.3 million), Brighton (£7.9 million), Nottingham Forest (£5 million), Brentford (£2.6 million), and Luton (£1.7 million).
