Members of the Academic Staff Union of Universities ASUU, University of Ilorin chapter have staged a peaceful protest against what they described as casualization of intellectual workers in the country.
Speaking with journalists at a news conference jointly addressed by the former ASUU chairman of the university and a council member of the union, Professor Rasheed Adeoye, and the secretary of the union, Olatunji Abdulganiyu, noted that the half salaries reportedly paid by government to members of the union for October was unacceptable.
The Union leaders said as law abiding citizens, members have heeded the directive of the court and resumed to their duty posts while the substantive matter is being heard.
They expressed displeasure that after resumption government decided to withhold part of members salaries.
The Union leaders noted that the law of the land is also clear on the issue, adding that the National Industrial Court made it clear in a landmark judgment in 2020 that full time workers can not be paid half salaries.
Similarly, the University of Ibadan Chapter of ASUU also protested the salaries received for the month of October.
The lecturers described it as merciless treatment from the federal government.
ASUU Chairman, UI Chapter, Prof Ayoola Akinwole, called on the Federal Government to fulfill agreements reached with the union.
Similarly, a former National Treasurer of ASUU, Prof Ademola Aremu criticized the government over what he described as unfair treatment of lecturers.
ASUU branches had planned a one day nationwide protest over the payment of half salaries to lecturers by the Federal Government in October.
ASUU had on October 14, 2022, called off its eight-month strike after the National Industrial Court ordered the lecturers to resume.
