Earthquake kills over 50, injures hundreds in Indonesia

More than 50 people have died and hundreds wounded after a 5.6 magnitude earthquake rocked Indonesia’s West Java province on Monday.

Rescuers have made frantic efforts to rescue survivors trapped in rubbles as aftershocks hit.

West Java Governor Ridwan Kamil confirmed 56 deaths from the quake, whose epicentre was the town of Cianjur, about 75 km (45 miles) southeast of the capital, Jakarta.

Head of the city administration of Cianjur, West Java, Herman Suherman told news channel Metro TV that about 700 people had been injured and about 300 homes affected.

Relatives of the victims were gathering at Sayang hospital, he added, warning that the toll could rise as villagers may still be trapped in the rubble, and many families in villages had not yet been evacuated.
